Frequently Asked Questions
for family, motherhood and maternity photography sessions
When is the best time to book a newborn photography session?
It depends! I honestly don't think there is a "perfect time" for newborn photography sessions.
I know, that's not the most helpful answer... But really, the best time to book is the time you want to remember the most. You want the raw, beautifully fragile first days? We can book you in for a Fresh 48 photography session in the first one to three days of your baby's life outside the womb—it's important to book in advance for these sessions! This can take place in your home, or your chosen place of birth.
If you're wanting to remember the slow, sleepy early days before your baby gets really alert (although all babies are different, of course), I recommend a Kindred Session in your home within the first two weeks.
If you'd like to document the days when your pēpi is a little more interactive, I recommend any time from two weeks. This can be done as a Kindred Session (at your home), or a Storybook Session (at an outdoor location).
How far will you travel for a photo session?
I'm located in Palmerston North, and will travel up to an hour for a photo session. Travel costs are included for locations within 30km of Palmerston North - beyond this, a travel fee will apply.
Will you pose us?
My photography is gentle, authentic, and deeply rooted in emotional storytelling - I capture you as you are, so that in the years to come you can remember what you loved about this part of your life. I have a detailed preparation guide to help you feel at ease before your session, and will occasionally use prompts to draw out natural moments of connection.
Will you be sharing images from my photo session publicly?
I believe that people have a right to choose whether they want to be photographed, how they want to be photographed, and how they are comfortable for images of themselves to be used. I will only ever share images with explicit written permission, and have a robust image release system where people choose exactly what images they're happy for me to use, and what settings I'm allowed to use them in. And consent is an ongoing process! What feels right at one time may not feel right later, and that's totally okay. I've had clients change their minds before, and withdraw consent, and I will always respect and honour that.
Do I receive a full gallery of images, or do I have to choose a few?
All of my photo sessions, with the exception of mini sessions, include a full gallery of images. With an approach rooted in organic storytelling, I believe that every moment is part of a larger narrative, and I want to present your story in its entirety. In the years to come, my hope is for you to be able to relive the tender details and nuances of your family as it is now - a beautiful, complete narrative, rather than a few isolated snapshots.
What do I wear for my photography session?
My client guide includes detailed advice on styling. But the bottom line is - whatever makes you feel like you!
How long are the photo sessions
Photo sessions are really just as long as they need to be to tell your story. I give a rough guideline for each session on my pricing page, but sometimes sessions don't take long at all, and sometimes they do take the full time frame. I recommend planning for it to take the maximum amount of time stated, but know it could vary.
